The follow-up mechanism to the Belem do Para Convention (MESECVI) is a system that looks at progress made by States Party to fulfill the objectives of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women.
This report by the committee of experts of the follow-up mechanism provides information on violence in child pregnancy and sexual and reproductive rights, and makes a number of recommendations to the States Party.
According to the report, when considering laws that allow children to marry before 18 years old with parental or judicial consent, many states that are Party to the Belem do Para Convention, have established a legal minimum age for marriage around 14 years old for girls and 16 years old for boys.
The report call States Party to reform laws and practices to increase the minimum age for marriage without exception; to guarantee education on sexual and reprodctive rights for all girls and boys; and to produce information and statistics to inform public policies in favour of girls' rights to live free from violence and discrimination.
