Plan International and Coram Children's Legal Centre undertook research into the root causes of child marriage in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Indonesia. The research finds that child marriage is rooted in rigid gender norms and is frequently used as a way to control girls' sexuality.
The report also reiterates that education is an effective strategy to prevent child marriage: girls who stay in school tend to marry later. The report makes recommendations for programmatic interventions as well as messaging for advocacy and communications work.
