The threat to adolescent development from Covid-19 in rural Bangladesh
Extended school closures in Bangladesh since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has, according to a wide range of media sources, increased the risk of early marriage among adolescent girls. We provide one of the first pieces of rigorous analysis of the effects of the pandemic on early marriage patterns using four years of longitudinal data for a nationwide sample from both before and since the beginning of the pandemic. The evidence suggest that the pandemic may have a prolonged adverse effect on the incidence of female early marriage in Bangladesh. We discuss the policy implications of these findings.
